Health Group- Year 2, week 25

Good morning. The sun is out, it’s looking to be a beautiful autumn day. We are heading off to the store to get food for the big diet change. I’m hoping to start having legitimate Health Group posts again, as opposed to the recently common list of excuses. Like this one…

Well, I didn’t exercise this week. I’m hoping that next week will be better, but I’m taking steps. This diet change is supposed to help me feel better and have more energy, so I should be able to exercise more.

And the pregnant weigh-in this morning? 232.5. I’m happy with that. I was up at 234 earlier in the week.

How are you doing?

Well, I’m still on the excuse train but I am hoping to get off at the next stop :-). Typically when I have a long weekend like this I start to feel optimistic about life in general around the third day, so I am right on schedule. I’m sick of all the junk food I’ve been eating and I am so rested that I have no excuse for bumming around on the couch. Now if I can just keep myself from running into an emotional wall on Monday.

I’m glad that you are doing better and I wish you luck on South Beach. Since you are already a person who cooks, it should work well for you. We flirted with that plan, but we knew we couldn’t stick to it because we are a convenience-food family.

I’ve been stuck at, within a couple of pounds, at 250 for a couple of months now. Better than having gained anything back, but it doesn’t look like I’m going to lose anything more unless I actually get up off my butt and start moving. Milestone: I got my wedding ring resized…it’s down 2 sizes! That’s really something, I think.

I’ve read the South Beach book too and I like the general principals of that diet (lower carbs, not NO carbs). There are some extreme bits here and there, and I can’t actually follow a “diet” per se, but I try to make choices based on better carbs and better portion sizes. I’m also a big proponent of eating snacks throughout the day as long as they’re healthy snacks, to keep your blood sugar even. Do I do these things? Not really. I’m still trying to shift my habits.

When I’m making a concious effort to eat properly, I feel like my entire day is about food. It takes a lot of time and organization to eat right. Planning meals, having the right foods in the fridge, shopping regularly so you don’t run out of staples. We always end up lapsing due to not stocking the kitchen in a timely fashion. Vegetables I forget we bought end up turning bad in the fridge. I despise it all. I just need more information and recipes, and need to set up a master shopping list to facilitate the whole thing. Once I’ve got all that going, it will get easier, more natural. I hope.

Hey Maggie – sounds like you need savingdinner.com. She’ll email you weekly low-carb menus WITH the shopping list and recommended sides, so you can just post the list on your fridge or calendar and go with it. It cuts a chunk of time off your shopping too since the list is nicely laid out. I haven’t tried the low carb one but I have her cookbook which is GREAT and I subscribed for a while to the regular meals. It saves a lot of headache, and you never run out of dinners for the week, and you never get to 5pm and wonder what there is for dinner. Bon appitete!

I love the shopping! I usually go to Trader Joe’s since I find thier products tend to be the free-range, organicy stuff which is supposed to be better for you. Also I likes the cheaper prices. As you get more used to this new way of eating, shopping will be easier. You will just know what you eat and will know how to quickly grab it. Have fun!

I’m back up to 190 and eating ice cream. I need to treadmill again. My attitude is ok, I really want to work out. I just don’t seem to find TIME!!!

Monica, thanks. I’ve been to that site before and it’s a great idea, but the example recipes I saw aren’t really my cup of tea. I may check out her cookbook at a bookstore to see if there’s anything more I like. I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and do the work myself!
