The Sea Silk Stole is about 4,000 stitches away from being done! Which is only 48 or so rows, which really, isn’t a lot. It just sounds like a lot. But it isn’t a lot! I’m on the edging.
I’m so excited!
The girls are sewing beads and buttons onto squares of denim that we’ll sew into little purses later today.
They’re having fun, and I’ve told them that if they can figure out how to do it without needing help every other stitch, they can make beaded and buttoned purses and such to their hearts’ content, all summer long.
Weird story…
At 3:30 am Sunday morning, I awoke to Nate’s car alarm. I looked out the window and his dome light was on, so he and I got flashlights and went outside. The streetlight in front of our house has been out for a few weeks, so it was pitch black out there. Nate shined the flashlight on an abandoned suitcase on wheels on the sidewalk at the end of our walkway. His car door had been opened, but not damaged, thankfully. They must have had a slim jim or something.
My house/car keys had been left in plain sight in his car, and fortunately, they got spooked off before grabbing them. That was the only thing in the car, so nothing was stolen. We called the police and on the way to our house, they arrested some car prowlers 10 blocks away, that turned out to be the same guys because they had a bag with them that belonged to the same person that the abandoned suitcase on our sidewalk belonged to.
Totally weird, and creepy that some hoodlums on a spree got that close to my house keys.
What’s weirder is that I had a funny feeling that night, so we left our front lights on, and I prayed specifically that our home and family would be protected that night.
And that’s awesome.

Wow, that is scary. I’m glad you guys are alright. Your story serves as a good reminder that we should be careful even if we live in good neighborhoods and in direct view of many neighbors. My family is in the same situation and it’s easy to get a false sense of security and think that you are somehow immune. I am so glad everything turned out well for you guys. Take care!

That’s amazing – and so good that they didn’t get your keys! A guy almost stole my wallet at the doctor’s office last Friday. I had to take Nathan to the toilet and accidently left it by the sink. I went back for it a minute later and this guy was coming out of the restroom. I asked him if he’d seen it, and he said no. But after frantically looking through all my bags again, I was making a big deal of it because I had just had it in my hands! I practically had the whole office (including patients) looking for it. One lady found it under the chair where the guy had been sitting – he’d already been called back to see the doctor. Fortunately only a few dollars were missing (no cards,) but the office had me report it to their security officer anyway. What a jerk!
Looks like the girls are having a great time – I’m waiting for one of those potholder weaving kits to arrive for my boys to do something crafty.

How scary!! I’m so glad that everyone was okay and that they caught the guys. THat’s a bit unnerving when it’s literally right outside your door. Yick. That’s one of the reasons we have a HUGE mountain dog LOL. Pyrenees can fight off bears!!! So I always feel more secure when John’s not here since Shimo is :o)
I can’t wait to see the stole!!! I’m sure it’s beautiful.

I am glad that you and your family are safe. Julie is so right. A few years ago when I was living on a ground floor apartment my landlords used to make fun of me because I locked all the windows at night. They said I would be safe, but I kept remembering Ted Bundy and other serial killers and kept locking my windows and doors! I’d rather be a safe fool.
Regarding your deal with the girls–you are a very smart momma.

Ooh, intuition at work. I’m so glad everything turned out alright, if creepy.
And I love the photo of your girls sewing away. Mrs. Claus gave me a sewing kit and knitting needles for Christmas when I was seven, and both have enjoyed steady use since. You’re a good mom to teach them that. Lifelong fun.
Can’t wait to see the stole!

I”m so glad you and your family are safe! Sometimes those premonitions pay off…and this time, the good guys win. Also, you are one smart Mom, giving your daughters independent crafting activities like that. Sometimes I wish everyone would give their kids a chance to be independent learners and thinkers! Think of how much smarter the adult world would be!

1) How fun, beaded purses! It’ll be exciting to see what the girls come up with!
2) Oh, I’m so glad that you woke up and heard your car alarm/interrupted the thieves before they could steal anything or do any more damage.
3) Pep Talk: Laura, you are sabotaging yourself when you get too busy to make time for yourself. Hence, you need to make time for Laura.
4) I like your spinning, and congrats on being *almost* done with the stole! =) Also, OUCH!
5) Nate, you slacker! You aren’t supposed to skim them, but read them, carefully, paying attention to every detail! (That’s what I did. Not to brag *ahem*, but I reread all six books this month. Hee.)
6) I’m sorry, but I’m not going to make it tonight. I’d like to, but seven days of non-stop people (seriously, at no point during my friends visit was I ever away from them) has left me with a serious craving for silence. Sorry.
