Last night, Nate brought home the new issue of Vogue for me. He sat down and we both looked through it together. I’m not sure what my overall opinion is yet, but I do have an opinion about parts of it, and many other knitting magazines for that matter. WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH ALL THESE BREAST BARING PATTERNS? Do people actually wear these things? I’m having a hard time picturing them looking right with shirts underneath, and they certainly aren’t modeled that way…… I don’t get it. I love lace knitting, but a lace pattern across the chest that is going to expose more than it should is just tacky. You can’t wear it to work, I can’t imagine wearing it walking down the street, you don’t wear a big, long sleeved sweater in nightclubs. Where do people wear them? It’s ridiculous. To me it seems like a waste of space in a magazine. If I’m missing something then please, fill me in.
Deep breath.
OK, so I’m knitting last night on mom’s sweater
and Nate comes over, picks up Abigail’s scarf, and starts knitting himself. (He’s done this a time or two). It is a truly interesting feeling knitting along with the husband. He has turned Abby’s scarf into a bit of a sampler in that there’s a little bit of garter stitch, a little bit of stockinette, then back to garter stitch with no apparent pattern. It occurred to me last night that I should probably go and get a skein or two of a nice yarn, establish a simple check pattern or something, and hand it over to him. When I asked him if he’d be receptive, he make a strange face and said that he would, however don’t expect him to stick with the pattern. Now, he doesn’t knit often, and I really don’t expect that he will ever take it seriously himself, but it is super cute to see him do it. He enjoys the simple, repetitive movements. He agrees that it is relaxing, and he once said that he can see how addicting it can be. So there we were, together on the couch, quietly knitting. Cute, cute.

Well, I guess you could wear a flesh colored tank under some of the things (I was only looking at the pics on the website) and give the illusion you wre exposing more than you really were. Some of the pics were absolutely laughable! Are they going for the historical or histerical look??? The pink shawl thing with the big collar was somewhat cute. Usually they have some very nice things. I’ll just have to drop by and see the live version of the mag.
I can just see Nate picking up a pair of needles. I feel the same way when Art helps me embroider. I remember a few years ago at Christmas, coming home from work and he was upstairs in my sewing room, the machine humming away, as he was embroidering the gifts we were making for Christmas. It’s very adorable.

Also, I was going to say, that some very famous football players, NFL, that is, were knitters, Rosie Grier for one, he also crochetted and did needlepoint. So did my father, although he was not a famous NFL football player. There are a lot of men who knit. Can anyone name more?

Hi Laura! When we first got married, I wanted to learn how to tat, and I bought the shuttle and thread and a book to try and teach myself. I couldn’t figure it out whatsoever, so my husband attempted to help me, and it ended up that he took to it right away, and it became HIS hobby for a while!! He made many many beautiful snowflakes that winter, then he never picked it up again. Alas, now he just makes fun of crocheting and knitting. Your progress on your Mom’s sweater looks gorgeous! Jenny

I haven’t seen the latest issue of VK so I can’t give an opinion on those designs you’re referencing, but I do know that overall lacy sweaters are all the rage in the magazines I buy over here. There is at least one in every mag, and I see women who wear them on hazy days with a tank underneath them. They also wear them to the beach in the evening…I saw someone who wore one over a strapless halter and it did look really cool on her in a beach chic way.

OK, I guess I can see that. Evening beach strolls aren’t part of everyday life here in Seattle :-), but it makes sense. I personally think that is what cardigans are for. Hmmm, I wonder how a lace cardigan would look?
