Today was the first day of five weeks of daily swim lessons for the girls. They have had almost no water experience their entire lives, and I thought it was time they learned. Plus, Olivia’s boredom and restlessness had already set in.
It was cute. Veronica is very nervous in the water, and even though she is signed up for a “class”, she’s the only one in it, so she was 1 on 1 with the instructor, a cuteish, curly haired kid that obviously lifts weights. She was clinging to him for her life, and he very politely asked her to “please stop pulling (his) hair.” By the end, she was doing better, but I’m hoping she starts enjoying herself so this doesn’t end up being expensive, parent-afflicted torture for her.
The other two did well in their class.
We were going to go to another yarn store today after lessons to look for stocking and chemo cap yarn, but I pushed that off ’til tomorrow so I could do other important things like lunch, laundry, and kitchen cleaning. I hope to have something yummy to show you from the yarn store after tomorrow.

I think it is awesome you are getting the girls into swimming (great sport and valuable ability). I know a lot of parents *hate* those arm floaty things but my parents used them on me with much success. Apparently I threw myself into two seperate pools twice before I was three, so they felt it necessary to get me swimming asap. My dad admitted to me as an adult that he had put on the floaty things but left the air valves open. I would swim about for awhile before I would notice (of course, my dad was always in the pool supervising me). He said within a few trips to the pool I had stopped noticing my deflated arm pillows and he did not have to use them while swimming with me. Perhaps using a life vest, pillow things, or another floatation device might help give Veronica some confidence in the water to move on towards solo swimming.

I saw an interesting floating device yesterday while I was at Fred Meyer that was supposed to be good for teaching young kids how to swim. It had several floaty pads in it that could be taken out one at a time as they learn to be better swimmers. I almost bought one, but I’m not sure when I’m going to have access to a pool in the near future.

I used to have swimming lesson as a kid too, but my friends still claim that I “don’t really” swim.

Yay for swim lessons! I used to teach them in high school. 🙂 Even if Veronica doesn’t like them now, she’ll get used to them — most little kids have a week or two of resistance, then settle in and relax. It’s all about being proud of small victories until then. 🙂

I have always, always wished that I took swimming lessons when I was a kid. I think it’s a great idea! I’m still a pretty incompetent swimmmer and I wish that wasn’t the case!

Are you going to St. Edwards? I’ll have to find out who your instructors are! They have the cutest guys there! Of course, I hate admitting that they see me in a swim suit (hideous) but I am the youngest one in the 8AM water aerobics class. Besides, they are all very nice and fun and friendly!
Way to go girls! We should see about going to one of the $1 Friday afternoon swims when the lessons are over. Abs & Liv can finally teach me to swim!
