Oooh, ahhhhhhhh….
This is the Feather and Fan shawl from Meg Swansen’s Gathering of Lace book, knit with the optional eyelet panels. It’s over 6 feet in diameter, and here you see it pinned and blocking for the shawl show. I had to re-block it because the first time I blocked it, I stretched it out to over 8 feet or something. It was huge, and the scalloped edges were sort of distorted. It looks much nicer now.
The reason I decided to knit this shawl was because I felt an overwhelming need to knit the center of it…
Once again… Oooooooh, ahhhhhhhhhh!!! It’s so pretty. I’m planning on going down to Weaving Works today to see it displayed it in the show. I can’t help it. It’s my masterpiece thus far. And now, consistent with each time I look at and handle it, I really want to knit another big lace shawl.

This is stunning – breathtaking. Congratulations.

Wow! Do you think they can display it all pinned out like that? Can’t think of any other way to display it that would do your masterpiece justice.

April 5th, 2005 at 12:33 am
How on earth did you find the time to do that with three kids around!!? It’s absolutely beautiful.
April 5th, 2005 at 12:52 am
What a beautiful shawl!! You did a fantastic job on it. I also love the center. I am currently working on the Spiral Lace shawl from the same book (started it last April). Give yourself a huge pat on the back – those shawls are labors of love to be sure!

Ooh! It truly is wonderful! I’ve yet to knit a round lace shawl, but it is on my list… I’ll get to it when the gazillion or so other projects on the list are done. 😉

To answer the question on finding time, I was in a car accident two years ago. I started the shawl a couple months afterward. I hurt too bad to do anything other than sit, so I had plenty of knitting time, and my children were probably neglected to some degree, but I didn’t have much of a choice.
The shawl went with me to doctor and massage appointments, so I would work on it in waiting rooms and such.
This is why I’m not sure if I could make another one, as much as I’d like to. I’m still physically limited in my activities, but I don’t have that much knitting time anymore as I’m more able to move around.

Holy cow! That’s a shawl?!!! I’ve never seen one like that before – it’s absolutely gorgeous! How do you wear it? I must order that book, maybe when my boys are older and I’m sitting at endless soccer games…

Oooh and Aaaah!! That is a masterpiece…I would knit it for the same reason. The center is mesmerizing.

What a good thing it is that you learned to knit! That’s a magnificent shawl. I hope to see a photo of YOU wearing it…?
I, too, have overblocked a shawl. One of mine was a knee length cape for a while until I re-sogged it and was a little less vehement about the stretching. It’s hard to know when to quit.

Wow, that is gorgeous–really breathtaking! How long did it take to knit, if you don’t mind my asking.
April 5th, 2005 at 7:31 am
Answers to more questions….
I used Merino Lace by Skacel, and it took me 5 1/2 months to knit. During that time, it was my only project, and I probably spent hours on it every day.

Wow. That is just absolutely stunning. It is next in line for me. I’ll be using KnitPicks Shimmer yarn in turquoise.
