If I were feeling kinder towards myself, I could have titled this entry, “Live and Learn”, but I’m not. I’m a dork.

Yesterday, I was knitting on the Manos Mitt. Finished it, in fact. It’s stunning.

The second one is started and I’m three inches into it, but I put it aside last night to finish up Grandma’s Koigu socks. To be safe, I had decided to add two rows and then begin the toe decreases. (Thanks for the comments and suggestions to my Fingers and Toes entry, by the way. The problem is, the feet these socks are being made for are in St. George, Utah, so I can’t try them on the real deal before I decrease).

Getting back to it… So I’m adding the two rows, and I decide to try it on once more, just in case I was on crack or something the last time I slipped it on. Guess what? It was significantly smaller on my foot than it was on Sunday. In fact, it was exactly as long as it should have been. I’ve got 6 1/2 inches of sock, and 3 1/2 inches of foot left, thus adding up to my 10 inch foot. I sit, somewhat stunned, staring at my foot as I contemplate how in the world it could behave differently today than it did three days ago. Then it occurs to me, I was wearing nylons. On Sunday, fresh out of church, I was wearing nylons. Now, being too lazy to take them off, I thought to myself, “what difference can nylons make? None. It’s just like a naked foot, right?” No. It isn’t. And do you want to know what else? My Mother-in-law who was helping with this effort, was also wearing nylons.

The reason this is so humiliating is NOT that I thought I could get away with trying a sock on over nylons to get an accurate length measurement. No. The reason this is so humiliating is that trying them on, over nylons, and being completely confused at the result didn’t cause me to think that MAYBE IT WAS THE NYLONS!!! For goodness’ sake.

So today, I’m going to re-knit the several rows that I frogged on Sunday, (thinking that I had knit them too long), so I can start the toe decreases.

I debated whether or not to share this with you. I really did. I thought, “If I tell them, they may never take me seriously again. At some future time, when I really need help with something, I’ll get some snide remark (most likely from Gayle) about trying it without the nylons”. But then I thought, you all deserve a laugh today, as much as anyone. And I really don’t mind being laughed at when I’ve done something stupid. Usually. Besides, it IS possible (work with me here) that someone else might be in a position to make the same mistake. It’s possible. So, I’m doing you all a favor, right?

Moving on.

The Manos Mitt is soooooo pretty! And I haven’t started Cable-Eight yet. But Jena has!
