Homespun is not my friend

While it may be soft and lovely, Homespun is definitely not going to make a regular appearance around here. The stuff is not much fun to knit with, at all, and Olivia agrees with me. It is possible that on different needles it would work better. I have read on a few blogs that plastic yarn likes plastic needles. I still use bamboo for nearly everything, and would rather find different yarn than buy different needles so that I could test it out. On the plus side, since I don’t hold Homespun in very high regard, it caused me no pain whatsoever using much of the remaining skein to stuff the rabbit. This worked out great, considering that the square wasn’t knit very tight, and was therefore pretty see-through and penetrable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Diane for her comment last week, inspiring me with the idea. I honestly don’t think I would have thought of it on my own. At least not before trying many other severely less intelligent methods. So Diane, I thank you. Stuffing the bunny with it’s own yarn worked out loverly.

Yes, that’s a bunny butt.

At the birthday party, Olivia forgot to mention that she made the gift. I can’t believe that! I would have thought she’d be obnoxious about the fact, being so proud and all.

Here are some additional pictures from the bunny shoot, in case you are interested. I used to designate these links for family, but I am getting that some of you out there like to see my kids!

That bunny is fantastic. I am so proud of Olivia! I would havr been telling everyone that my daughter made that rabbit!
I hate Homespun too. I have made a baby sweater and a shawl out of it and I had to go buy plastic needles before I went crazy!!
    Job well done to Olivia!

    Very nice, Olivia!

(Adorable – children and bunny 🙂
So glad to hear some there are some fellow Homespun-dislikers out there. That was the yarn I bought to learn to knit with – not the best choice. I see other bloggers knitting beautiful stuff out of it, but I have yet to have any success (fyi, I’ve tried bamboo and cheap metal needles in US 8-10.5).

Woo hoo! You joined! Excellent, excellent. Now, when I run into problems with it, I have someone “here” who I can ask about it. (Life really is all about me.)
And the bunny looks great. You, er, um, Olivia did a very nice job on it. And I also would have shouted to high Heaven that I made it.

What a cute bunny! I have the same pattern but haven’t tried it out yet. I agree about the Homespun. I tried to make my Olivia a sweater and could never get the tension right.

Kudos to Olivia (and her ever-helpful Mom) for a wonderful bday present!

Bunny turned out great! I think I like the added texture from the garter stitch. Looks very cuddly.

I do know the love/hate allure of Homespun. Could be okay for scarves or an afghan… but it’s so doggone splitty!

Cute bunny but cuter girls! You really do have a beautiful family. 🙂

Wah! Cute bunny, cute young knitter! And naturally modest. What a lovely mum you must be to produce such a great gal.

Glad the stuffing idea worked out for you. Wasn’t it a fine way to rid yourself of the hated, dreaded yarn? Did you wind it up, or shred it, or stuff netting with it, or what-all?

Around here, I taught my DD to knit when she was eight using acrylic yarn and aluminum needles so as to save money. The needles clung to the yarn with a deathgrip and she abandoned knitting. ‘Twas quite traumatic for both of us.

Twelve (12!) (TWELVE!) years later we tried again with bamboo and sheepswool and discovered that she is a fine natural knitter. And a natural crocheter, too, with natural materials.

Ah, well. In between she became an accomplished quilter!

That bunny is so adorable! And what a perfect way to use up Homespun – as stuffing! I LOVE the idea, because I too hate working with that yarn.
